BOP Federal Release Search

The Federal Bureau of Prisons inmate locator is the federal prison release path. It is separate from Conecuh County Jail, the Alabama Department of Corrections, ICE, and ALEA registry records. Use BOP when the person served or is serving a federal sentence. BOP states that its locator covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present and includes information about federal inmates released after 1982.

Where Federal Releases Go

Federal custody is separate from county and state custody. A person arrested by local authorities in or near Conecuh County can later become a federal defendant, and a federal defendant can be temporarily housed in a local jail under U.S. Marshals arrangements. That local housing does not make the federal release a Conecuh County Jail release. If the person is convicted and sentenced federally, the BOP locator becomes the prison-release path.

Research notes that the U.S. Marshals Service handles federal detention and transport after arrest or remand. Individuals arrested or detained under federal law are brought before a magistrate or judge for an initial hearing. After that hearing, they may be released or remanded to U.S. Marshal custody to stand trial. If convicted, USMS delivers the prisoner to the institution for the imposed sentence. The later prison release is usually checked through BOP.

A BOP record may show a release date or no current facility location when the person is no longer in BOP custody. That is a federal record. It does not confirm a Conecuh County Jail bond release, a state ADOC discharge, an ICE release, or an ALEA registry status.

How to Use the BOP Locator

Use BOP only when the case is federal or the person served a federal sentence.

  1. Open the BOP inmate locator at https://www.bop.gov/inmateloc/.
  2. Search by BOP register number if known, or search by name and other identifying details.
  3. Review the result for current facility, release date, or indication that the person is not in BOP custody.
  4. Remember that BOP's about-records page says the data covers federal inmates incarcerated from 1982 to the present and released federal inmates after 1982.
  5. If the person was only in Conecuh County Jail, use the sheriff and Conecuh court instead.
  6. If the person may have moved from local or state custody into federal proceedings, use federal court or USMS context along with BOP.

BOP also cautions that First Step Act sentence reviews and Federal Time Credit changes can affect release-date accuracy. A projected federal release date should be checked against the current locator record and not treated as guaranteed.

BOP Records and Contact Path

The research file identifies BOP's inmate locator and the BOP about-records page as the primary sources. BOP is a national federal prison system, not a Conecuh facility. No federal prison facility was identified in Conecuh County during research.

About Federal Release Records

Federal release records can be useful when local searches fail because the case was not local anymore. A person can be arrested locally, transferred on a federal warrant, held under U.S. Marshals authority, remanded after a federal hearing, or later sentenced to BOP custody. Each stage has a different record source. Conecuh County court may not hold federal court filings, and ADOC will not be the state-prison path for a federal sentence.

Federal Release Is Not County Release

A person released from Conecuh County Jail on bond may never appear in BOP. A person released from BOP may have no current Conecuh jail record. A person transferred from local custody to federal custody may show a local transfer event and a federal custody path. The important step is to ask which agency had authority at the time of the release.

Use Conecuh County Jail for local release verification, ADOC for state prison custody, ICE Release for immigration detention, and this page for federal prison release. Use Conecuh court or federal court to connect the custody path to the case.

BOP Locator Limits

BOP's locator is broad for federal records, but it is not every law-enforcement record. It does not show county jail release lists, state prison historical data, local court dispositions, registry status, or ICE custody. It also includes the First Step Act caveat about recalculations affecting release-date accuracy. A federal release date should be described as current as of the source and checked again when precision matters.

For Conecuh County research, the practical test is whether a federal sentence or federal detention authority exists. If the only known facts are a Conecuh arrest, a local bond, or a Conecuh court setting, BOP is probably the wrong first stop. If the case moved to federal court or the person was sentenced federally, BOP becomes the correct prison locator. Use the court record to bridge those facts instead of assuming that every jail transfer leads to a federal release record.
